Habitat for Rare Plants

Tall bugbane - Cimicifuga elataSeveral rare species of plants are known to occur in habitats along the south ridgeline, while several others are suspected to occur there, and some others possibly might occur there. These include species that grow in the understory of forested areas, as well as species that only grow in open prairie and savanna habitats. In most cases, these plant species have become rare because the habitats they grow in are also becoming rare, due to fire suppression, timber harvest, and conversion of forest and prairies to other uses, including agriculture and urban development.
